Controlling Incontinence Caused Due To Stress

Incontinence is a problem generally triggered by aging. But, recent studies have indicated that stress is another major factor that may cause this. There are a few very good medicines but, for taking them, you should take the advice of your doctor. You can also learn to manage your stress levels. Yogic and breathing exercises may help you to manage your stress. Of course, meditation will also help to calm your mind. You should understand about stress continence and take a few common-sense steps to control it.

- People wrongly think that only women are affected by stress incontinence. This can happen in men also. But, it is true that women are more prone to be affected by this when they cross their middle age. Incontinence happens because the pelvic floor muscles become weak. Due to this, they do not contract enough when there is an undue pressure on the abdomen. Whenever you laugh or sneeze or indulge in any other activity that exerts more pressure on your abdomen, you release a small quantity of urine. It may cause severe embarrassment and the fear of this again causes more stress. Though aging and certain surgeries weaken the muscles in the case of men, in women, weakening of muscles may happen due to pregnancies, vaginal births, multiple abortions, etc. Other factors that may lead to weakening of pelvic muscles are obesity and heavy smoking. These two factors affect both men and women.

- The first step you should take to combat this problem of stress continence is to avoid or reduce having certain foods and beverages. Especially, alcoholic beverages and those containing more of caffeine should be avoided because they have a capacity to irritate your bladder and stimulate it excessively. When the bladder is over-stimulated, you will not be able to control releasing of urine. The foods you should avoid or reduce are oily and spicy foods, certain citrus fruits, etc. You should completely avoid taking aerated drinks like soda and bottled drinks because they not only irritate your bladder but they contain a lot of bad carbohydrates in them and these may harm your health in the long run. If you start reducing or avoiding the above foods and drinks, you can definitely see a remarkable improvement.

- As mentioned earlier, you should shed the habit of smoking forthwith. This habit is a major contributor for bladder irritation. Further, smoking may cause heavy coughing which again puts a lot of pressure on your abdominal region. This increases incontinence. People have the wrong notion that smoking and drinking are antidotes for stress. They can not be more wrong. Perhaps, due to heavy drinking, you may forget your stress-related worries for a few hours but once you get sober, your stress and worries will attack you with more vigor.

- You should make all-out efforts to reduce your weight. It is better you consult your doctor, dietitian and physical trainer so that you can plan the most appropriate diet and exercise regimens which you should scrupulously follow for reducing your weight. It is a proven fact that weight gain plays a major role in causing stress incontinence.

- Ensuring a good bowel movement is highly important for controlling this problem. When there is constipation, the pressure on the abdomen is more. Further, you will not feel light mentally and physically when you have the problem of constipation. To surmount this problem, you should add liberal doses of fiber foods to your diet. Fresh fruits and vegetables including green leafy ones and foods that are made of wholesome grains will greatly help. You should avoid or reduce foods like ice creams, sweets, cakes, pastries, cheese, meat, oily and spicy foods and snacks and above all, the most dangerous processed foods. Most of these foods supply large amounts of free radicals to your body which are highly harmful to your health. These foods are certain to cause constipation also. Constipation problem can be tackled by drinking plenty of water daily. Water flushes out most of the toxins from the body and hydrates the body also very effectively. Water will help you to tackle constipation as well as bladder irritation and hence, your stress incontinence will vanish.

If you follow the above simple steps, you can easily get rid of your stress incontinence problem.
